The Smale Institute for Mathematics and Computation is an open and global research institute dedicated to advancing the fields of Mathematics and Computation. By harnessing leading research from around the world, the Institute aims to unite Mathematics and Computation as a unified force to provide foundational insights and enhance the study of other scientific disciplines through data and algorithms.
One of the Institute's key goals is to investigate the fundamental theory of computation ("laws of computation") and develop a deeper understanding of algorithms in areas such as:
- Large-scale linear and nonlinear equations
- Eigenvalues and eigenvectors
- Machine learning, deep learning, and optimization
- Probability, statistics, and data science
Such studies have become increasingly vital in the era of big data and artificial intelligence. Another core mission is to lay the groundwork for, and support the advancement of, interdisciplinary research in fields such as biology, psychology, and the social sciences.
The Smale Institute will collaborate with leading researchers and academic institutions worldwide through various initiatives, including providing financial support for research projects and individuals, joint research endeavors, and postdoctoral fellowships.
Professor Steve Smale serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Institute.
